Tree Preservation Order

Let this be a TPO lesson

Yusuf Jassat, the manager of the centre of New Ash Green, in Kent, “pleaded guilty to the charge of causing or permitting the felling of three trees that were covered by a Tree Preservation Order (TPO) at Sevenoaks Magistrates’ Court on Friday 12 January”.

He was concerned about an insurance claim, should a member of the public injure themselves from a trip or fall caused by uneven paths where tree roots had lifted the paving.

The courts felt that Jassat should have known that the trees were covered by a TPO when he asked the contractor to fell the trees and that his actions were deliberate.

The fine received was £5,000 and £3,600 in costs to be paid to the Council. Jassat has also agreed to replace the trees.

How do you know if your tree is covered by a TPO?

Before we carry out any tree work we always carry out a TPO check, so customers of Connick Tree Care have peace of mind that they will not be contravening this rule.

If the tree is covered by a TPO, we present to the Council the work that needs to be carried and gain their required approval.

Any reputable Tree Surgeon should carry out a TPO check on your behalf. Please check that this has been done, before agreeing to go ahead.
