Acts of Outstanding Bravery Award

We’re incredibly proud of our very own “Big Mark Hyland” who has been awarded a commendation for Acts of Outstanding Bravery by Members of the Public from Surrey Fire and Rescue Service.

Mark was presented this award after he heroically rescued three children from a fire.

The commendation read:

On the evening of 19th of September this year, Mr Mark Hyland heroically rescued three children from a fourth floor flat fire in Redhill.

The fire began in the bedroom where three children aged 4,7 and 8 were trapped. A passerby, seeing them at the window called 999. Mr Hyland, in the neighbouring flat, was alerted when someone pressed the ground floor intercom.

Without hesitation Mr Hyland broke through the heavy, locked door and led the children to safety.

Afterwards he re-entered the flat to fight the spreading fire with a container of water. Mr Hyland saw the flames spreading up the curtains rapidly and with the bedroom windows open, the fire could have entered the roof. He left the flat as conditions worsened.

Once outside Mr Hyland was treated for smoke inhalation by fire and ambulance crews before going to hospital for his injuries.

Although deeply humble about his actions Mr Hyland showed incredible bravery that evening.

He entered the flat fire without hesitation and was thinking about the safety of others before his own. His quick action saved lives. A true example of putting his community first and acting with integrity.

We’re proud and thankful to have Mark in our team. He’s a top arborist and an absolute legend!
