Client: Wellcome Trust
The Wellcome Trust is a global charitable foundation established in 1936, working towards a healthier future for everyone.
Location: Kensington Estate, London
Service: Tree Inspection & Disease Management
Overview
London plane trees (Platanus × hispanica) are a defining feature of the Wellcome Trust’s Kensington Estate. While robust and visually striking, they are susceptible to Splanchnonema platani, commonly known as Massaria disease. This fungal infection can lead to rapid limb dieback, posing a significant safety risk in public areas.
Connick Tree Care was appointed to manage the inspection, diagnosis and treatment of Massaria across the estate’s tree population. Our proactive approach ensures safety for residents and visitors while preserving the long-term health of these iconic trees.
Objectives
- Monitor the spread of Massaria disease across the estate’s tree stock
- Identify and mitigate risks through timely intervention
- Maintain a safe environment for the public and estate infrastructure
- Support the Wellcome Trust’s commitment to sustainable, heritage-led tree management
Our Approach
We follow a structured tree care strategy that aligns with British Standard BS 3998:2010 and best industry practice:
1. Prioritised Inspection Planning
Working closely with the estate management team, we identify London plane trees most at risk, particularly those adjacent to footpaths, roads and high-traffic areas.
2. On-Site Safety Setup
All operations are carried out with full PPE and public protection measures, including cordons to manage pedestrian access during inspections and remedial work.
3. Ground-Based and Aerial Assessments
Each tree is initially assessed for symptoms such as deadwood or discolouration. Qualified climbing arborists then inspect the canopy for Massaria indicators including:
- Cambium necrosis and bark delamination
- Pinkish lesions typical of Massaria
- Signs of decay or structural weakness
- Dead or at-risk limbs
4. Risk Evaluation and Reporting
Detailed reports with photographs, mapped locations and severity assessments are compiled. Each tree is risk-rated based on its location and the potential impact of branch failure.
5. Targeted Remedial Work
Infected or weakened limbs are carefully removed to mitigate risk. All works are completed in line with Arboricultural Association guidelines and environmental regulations.
6. Ongoing Monitoring
We carry out annual inspections and interim spot checks to track the disease’s progression and assess tree safety over time.
Results
- Reduced risk of falling branches, improving public safety across the estate
- Early detection and treatment prevented further structural decline
- A clearer understanding of disease spread, aiding future management planning
