The ecological importance of Veteran Trees has become increasingly apparent in the last few decades. At Connick Tree Care Consultancy (CTC) we recognise that these trees require a different approach in their assessment and management.
Veteran Trees are sometimes referred to as Ancient trees. Although the criteria for each differs, they share many of the same features and habitats. A Veteran Tree can be defined as ‘a tree that is of interest biologically, culturally or aesthetically because of its age, size or condition’ and will have features that, if assessed using only a risk averse health and safety mindset are often described as ‘defects.’ These features may include decay pockets, stem hollowing, splits, cracks, fungi and apical deadwood. The list is extensive. A tree that has these features for a significant length of time will have developed microhabitats where ecosystems unique to the tree species have developed. These ecosystems can contain rare and endangered species of invertebrates, fungi, bats and lichens.
Should the tree supporting these habitats and ecosystems be removed or poorly managed without consideration of the Veteran Tree features, rare and unique habitat and species will be lost forever. At CTC we are experienced in highlighting and assessing Veteran Trees and their habitats. Producing management recommendations to balance duty of care (H&S) alongside Veteran Tree habitat retention. Our approach is holistic, centred around the tree whilst considering it’s wider environmental context.
